Recommended Websites Types of Car Seat Belts Seat belts are mandatory safety features in all cars that secure the passengers to the seat in case of an accident. As a part of the occupant restraint system, car seat belts can protect the occupants from being thrown from the vehicle during impact or collision. According to a research, seat belts save approximately 13,000 lives in the United States each year and 40,000 die from not wearing them. Auto companies are mandated by the law to install seat belts in the autos they manufacture, whereas drivers are required to wear them at all times when driving. There are different types of car seat belt designed for different applications that you can buy today. The 3-point seat belt is the most common type. This belt is attached in three places - two mounted near the rear of the seat and one towards the top of the side pillar, supporting both lap and shoulder portion. Another seat belt type type is the 2-point seat belt or lap belt, a restraint system with two attachment points. It has an adjustable strap that goes over the waist and is frequently used in vintage cars. Lap seat belts are also used in passengers aircraft. The last popular design of seat belt is known as the combination belt or the lap and shoulder belt. In this type, a seat belt is anchored at three points and restrains the occupant at the hips and across the shoulder. Seat belts were invented by George Cayley in the late 1800s and were first introduced in aircraft. Volvo had the first safety belts in 1849. The first U.S. patent for automobile seat beats was issued to Edward J. Claghorn. The most common seat belts, the three-point seat belts, were invented by a Swedish inventor, Nils Bohlin. Automotive
